Out of poor, impoverished and depressed times often comes a renewed sense of creativity. Never has this been more true than in the late 80’s during Thatcher’s reign when Northern England was gripped by self greed, poverty and humiliation. However, working Men’s clubs were a hive of activity providing the catalyst for bands like The Smiths and The Fall. Cropped double breasted luxury wool jackets and updated macs are twinned with ticking stripe shirts whilst neutral military coats are worn with coloured denim and flannel shirting. A hint of sportswear is introduced with the addition of velour track tops and pique polo shirts. The trend is accessorised by a mixture of collegiate and arran knit scarves, military boots and heavy soled loafers.
Inspired by tales of a solitary explorer and his stories of long journeys and survival, wilderness references the film ‘Into the wild’ and by fusing traditional hunting attire with vintage workwear and the use of waxed and felted fabrics, a feeling of the great outdoors is achieved. This becomes apparent when bright puffa jackets are matched with plaid flannel shirting and overscaled fair isle cardigans are worn underneath both cord cropped jackets and canvas kagools. The hunting theme to the trend is augmented by a bright red hunting coat and a selection of tweed suits. The trend is finished by a selection of fair isle scarves and check trapper hats.
As the title suggests, Privileged focuses on a wealthy entrepreneur’s son whose lifestyle is one of high profile parties and hedonism. The clothing reflects this indulgent bachelor’s behaviour with slim, refined tailoring and unstructured trench coats all apparent. Three quarter length military coats in both black and camel are worn with slim check trousers and piping is also evident on slim shirts and suiting. Tartan suits and double breasted jersey cardigans add to the feeling of opulence. Accessories are predominantly chunky knit in the form of gloves, snoods and scarves.
1972 and David Bowie’s alter-ego Ziggy Stardust is born. Shortly after this the phenomenon of glam rock erupts. The trend is based upon this era with skinny leg denims, elongated jackets and slinky jersey tops all reflecting this era of exhibitionism. Skinny sheen shirting with bold animal prints is evident throughout and is either twinned with washed, ripped skinny denims or sheen trousers whilst a metallic theme becomes apparent in the form of skinny fit suits and slim scarves. Bold graphic t-shirts and bright velour sweatshirts add a more casual edge to the trend.
